Do the teachers speak English?
Most of our teachers speak good English, especially those teaching beginner-level Portuguese. However, due to our teaching methodology, English is generally not used during classes. This is a conscious choice, as full immersion helps students progress faster and gain confidence in real-life communication. Outside the classroom, our team is always available to support students if needed.
Is English spoken in the classrooms?
Portuguese is the main language used in class. Especially at beginner levels, teachers may occasionally use English when strictly necessary, but the focus is always on immersion in Portuguese, in line with our methodology.
Do the teachers have an accent? What kind of accent?
Our teachers speak Brazilian Portuguese and naturally have a Brazilian accent. Students mainly learn the pronunciation and rhythm commonly used in Rio de Janeiro and in Brazil more broadly, helping them communicate naturally in daily life.
Are the teachers native speakers?
Yes. All Caminhos teachers are native Brazilian Portuguese speakers and are professionally trained to teach Portuguese as a foreign language.
What are the nationalities of students who come here (percentage)? What is the age range?
Caminhos welcomes students from all over the world, including Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, and Oceania. Ages usually range from early 20s to 60+. We notice that people from very different backgrounds, from diplomats and professionals to travelers and digital nomads, feel comfortable at Caminhos. The atmosphere is informal and welcoming, while the school itself is professionally organized and academically well structured.
What are the school’s opening hours?
Caminhos is open from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. On Saturdays, the school is open from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The school is closed on Sundays.
Can I store my belongings at Caminhos? (including my bike?)
We do not have lockers, but students are welcome to leave personal belongings at the reception during class time. However, the school is not responsible for valuable items. In front of the school, there are dedicated bike rings where bicycles can be securely locked.
PORTUGUESE COURSES (GENERAL)
What types of classes do you offer?
Caminhos offers a wide range of Portuguese courses, including group classes, private and semi-private lessons, online classes, immersion programs, and special courses that combine Portuguese with Brazilian culture. Our courses are suitable for beginners as well as advanced students.
How many weeks does it take to complete the course?
The length of the course depends on your goals, starting level, and learning pace. In our curriculum, Portuguese is divided into different levels (A1 to C), with each level consisting of sublevels of two weeks. Some students study for a short period, while others continue for several months, progressing step by step through the levels. Our team is happy to help you choose the course duration that best fits your objectives.
Does Caminhos offer English courses?
Caminhos specializes exclusively in teaching Brazilian Portuguese to foreigners and does not offer English courses as part of its regular programs. However, through our own social project, Mais Caminhos, we provide free English programs for children from the local community as part of our educational support initiatives.
Does Caminhos offer immersion classes?
Yes. Immersion is at the core of our teaching approach. All our courses are designed to encourage active use of Portuguese, both in and outside the classroom, helping students progress faster and feel confident in real-life situations.
Does Caminhos offer immersion courses for companies?
Yes. Caminhos offers customized immersion programs for companies and professionals. These programs can be adapted to specific goals, schedules, and professional contexts.
Does Caminhos offer in-company classes?

Can children take Portuguese classes?

Does the Rio Immersion include tours and lunch?

LEVELS & PLACEMENT TEST
How can I find out my Portuguese level?
You can find out your Portuguese level by taking our online placement test. The test helps us understand your current knowledge so we can place you in the level that best matches your skills.
How far in advance should I take the placement test?
We recommend taking the placement test as soon as you decide to book your course, and at least a few days before your start date. This allows us to organize groups properly and prepare your schedule in advance.
When should I take the placement test for the Latin Speakers course?
If you are interested in the Latin Speakers course, we recommend taking the placement test before booking. This helps us confirm whether this course is the best fit for your language background and learning needs.
How can I move up to the next level?
Progression to the next level is based on your participation, progress in class, and teacher evaluation. Our teachers continuously monitor students’ development and will advise you when you are ready to move to the next level.
GROUP CLASSES
How can I enroll in a group course?
You can enroll in a group course by contacting our team through the website, email, or WhatsApp. To guarantee your place in the group, a deposit (non-refundable) of R$500 is required. Our team will guide you through the process, help you choose the right level, and confirm availability before your start date.
Who can I talk to if I’m not satisfied with the course content?
If you are not satisfied with the course content, we encourage you to speak with our academic coordinator or reception team. We take student feedback seriously and always aim to find a suitable solution.
What time should I arrive at school on the first day of class?
We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before your first class. This gives you time to complete any remaining payments, receive your books, have a coffee, check in at reception, and feel comfortable before the lesson starts.
Where can I find my classroom?
For group classes, we send classroom information on Saturdays, and you can also find your classroom listed at the school or ask at reception. For private classes, you can simply wait in the coffee area; your teacher will come and pick you up there.
How will I know my classroom and teacher on the first day?
Every Saturday, we send an overview of your schedule for the upcoming week, including class times, classroom information, and the name of your teacher. You can also check that information at the reception before your class starts.
Can I make up for a missed group class?
Group classes follow a fixed schedule. Unfortunately, missed group classes cannot be made up.
Does Caminhos offer afternoon courses?
Yes. Caminhos offers a conversation class on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
PRIVATE CLASSES
How do private lessons work?
Private lessons are fully personalized and adapted to your level, goals, and interests. You can focus on specific topics such as conversation, grammar, professional Portuguese, or everyday communication.
What should I do when I arrive for my private lesson?
When you arrive, you can wait in the coffee area. Your teacher will come and pick you up there at the scheduled time.
How can I schedule my private lesson?

When can I book my private class?
You can book private classes after we have received your payment, and subject to teacher availability. Our team will help you find the best possible schedule.
What are the available times for private classes?
Private classes are available from Monday to Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and on Saturdays, depending on availability.
Can I take private lessons with a friend?
Yes. You can take private lessons with a friend as semi-private classes, as long as both students have a similar level.
Does Caminhos offer discounts for semi-private classes?
Yes. For semi-private classes, each student receives a 30% discount on the regular private class price.
Can I take semi-private classes online?
Yes. Semi-private classes can also be taken online, subject to availability and scheduling.
Can I make up for being late to a private class?
Private classes are scheduled for a fixed time. If you arrive late, the class will still end at the scheduled time and cannot be extended.
What happens if I miss a private class?
Caminhos applies a 24-hour cancellation policy. If a private class is missed or canceled less than 24 hours in advance, it is considered given and cannot be made up. Full details are explained clearly at the time of booking in our terms and conditions.
How can I get a more personalized Portuguese lesson?
All students who book private or semi-private classes are asked to complete a questionnaire in advance. This allows you to indicate your learning style, goals, and topics of interest, so our teachers can prepare and adapt the lessons fully to your needs.
ONLINE CLASSES
How can I enroll in online group classes?

How do levels work in online classes?

What are the recommendations for online students?
We recommend a stable internet connection, the use of headphones, and a quiet environment. We also recommend checking the class link at least 5 minutes before the class starts to ensure the best possible learning experience and active participation.
What should I do before my online class?
Before your first online class, please make sure your device, internet connection, and audio are working properly. We also recommend logging in a few minutes early to be ready when the class starts.

STUDENT VISA
How can I apply for the Student Visa program?
To apply for the Student Visa program, you first choose a visa-eligible Portuguese program at Caminhos. After completing your enrollment and payment, our team will guide you through the next steps and inform you which documents are required for your visa application.
What documents do I need to send to Caminhos to apply for a student visa?
To start the process, you usually need to send us a copy of your passport, your preferred course start date, and your personal details. Our team will confirm the exact requirements based on your nationality and the Brazilian consulate where you will apply.
Which documents does Caminhos provide for the Student Visa application?
Caminhos provides the official enrollment letter required for the student visa application, confirming your registration, course details, and total study hours. We also provide institutional documents such as our operating license (Alvará) and registration documents, proving that Caminhos is a legally operating school authorized to issue visa-related documentation.
How is the Student Visa letter sent to the student?
The student visa letter is sent digitally by email and includes a digital signature. This digital signature is required for the letter to be accepted by Brazilian consulates or embassies.

Which courses are included in the visa packages?
Visa packages include Portuguese courses that meet the minimum study hour requirements set by Brazilian immigration authorities. Our Intensive Portuguese Group Course of 20 hours per week fully meets these requirements.
What is the difference between the 6-month and 1-year visa packages?
The difference lies in the total number of study weeks and hours. The 1-year visa package includes more study weeks and allows for a longer stay in Brazil.
What happens if I want to extend my visa?
Visa extensions depend on Brazilian immigration rules. In many cases, it is possible to apply for an extension or a new student visa while in Brazil after purchasing additional course weeks. Caminhos can provide guidance, but final approval is always made by the immigration authorities.
Can I take Portuguese classes with a tourist visa?
Yes. You can take Portuguese classes with a tourist visa, but tourist visas do not allow long-term stays or formal study registration.
Can I start with a tourist visa and later switch to a student visa?
Yes, it is possible to start studying with a tourist visa and later apply for a student visa. However, we generally recommend applying for the student visa in your home country, as the process is usually easier and often less expensive.
Does Caminhos provide student visa support?
Yes. Caminhos provides guidance and support throughout the student visa process. We assist with instructions, required school documents, and general guidance. However, Caminhos is not a visa agency: students remain responsible for gathering personal documents, attending appointments, and submitting their applications.
Does Caminhos offer class packages for the Nomad Visa?
No. Caminhos does not currently offer a specific program exclusively for the Nomad Visa. However, digital nomads are very welcome to join any of the Portuguese courses we offer.
CELPE-BRAS
From which level can I start Celpe-Bras preparation classes?
Celpe-Bras preparation is recommended from pre-intermediate level (A1-III) onwards. Students should already be able to communicate in Portuguese and have a basic understanding of grammar and vocabulary to benefit fully from exam-focused preparation.
Does Caminhos offer a Celpe-Bras course?
Yes. Caminhos offers Celpe-Bras preparation classes only in a private format. Lessons are fully adapted to the exam structure, tasks, and evaluation criteria. Please note that Caminhos does not offer group classes for Celpe-Bras preparation.
Does Caminhos register students for the Celpe-Bras exam?
No. Caminhos does not register students directly for the Celpe-Bras exam. Registration must be completed by the student through the official Celpe-Bras system and authorized exam centers. However, we are happy to assist and guide students throughout the registration process.

BILDUNGSURLAUB PROGRAM
Does Caminhos offer the Bildungsurlaub program?
Yes. Caminhos offers officially recognized Bildungsurlaub programs for learning Brazilian Portuguese in Rio de Janeiro.
Which courses are included in the Bildungsurlaub package?
The Bildungsurlaub package is offered as either a 25-hour or a 30-hour program per week, depending on the state where the applicant is applying. The core of both programs consists of 20 hours of Intensive Portuguese group classes, complemented by either 5 or 10 private lessons. All programs are fully in accordance with the requirements of the Bildungsurlaub regulations.
Does Caminhos provide the registration letter for the Bildungsurlaub program?
Yes. Caminhos provides an official registration and enrollment letter that can be submitted to your employer as part of your Bildungsurlaub application.

After this initial period, students will transition to mixed groups that include learners from various language backgrounds, with placements determined by their proficiency levels. How does the Combo 25 course work?

Survival Course
What is the Survival Course?
If you’re only in Rio de Janeiro for a short time and need a quick crash course in Portuguese, then the Caminhos Survival Rio Course is the choice for you! After just one day, students are able to carry out a series of basic tasks in Portuguese, such as greeting others, introducing themselves, asking for information or directions, ordering a taxi, ordering items in restaurants and shops, and navigating basic food items in the supermarket.
Which book is used for the Survival Course?
Besides the 4 hours of class, you will also receive a “Caminhos Survival Kit” that includes a Lonely Planet guide of Rio de Janeiro (PDF), “Caminhos’ Top 5s”, and a Student Card, which allows discounted entry into various tourist sites in Rio de Janeiro and throughout Brazil.

What are the payment methods?

When should I pay for my course?
To confirm your enrollment, a deposit or full payment is required before the course start date. The remaining balance should be paid on the first day of your course.
What is the credit card fee for courses?

Accommodation fees are calculated per week and depend on the type of accommodation, location, and season. High-season fees may apply. All prices are communicated transparently before confirmation.
How does payment through Flywire work?

Can I pay using Pix?

Can discounts be combined?
Caminhos applies a progressive and transparent discount system: the more weeks or hours you book, the lower the price per week or hour becomes. Discounts cannot be combined. Only one discount applies per course.

When and how can I pay for my accommodation?

How can I change the type or format of my course?
If you would like to change the type or format of your course (for example, from group to private, or from in-person to online), please contact our reception team as soon as possible. Changes are subject to availability and may involve a price adjustment.
Can I transfer my course to another person?
Courses are personal and non-transferable and may not be reassigned to another person.
How can I cancel my private class?
Private classes can be canceled by contacting our reception team at least 24 hours in advance on a business day. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the scheduled class are considered given and cannot be made up.
How can I cancel my group class?
Group classes follow a fixed schedule and cannot be canceled on a class-by-class basis. However, it is possible to take a break from your course if you communicate this in time with our reception team. If you need to stop or cancel your group course entirely, please contact us so we can explain the applicable conditions and available options.
What should I do if I need to pause my course?
If you need to pause your course due to travel, illness, or personal reasons, please inform our reception team as early as possible. We will do our best to find a suitable solution, depending on the course type and duration.
Can I make up for being late to a class?
Unfortunately, classes cannot be extended if you arrive late. Lessons always end at the scheduled time, both for group and private classes.

ACCOMMODATION
In which neighborhoods does Caminhos offer accommodation?
Caminhos offers accommodation in safe and well-located neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro, mainly in Ipanema, Copacabana, and surrounding areas. Sometimes, que can organize places closer to the city center, if requested. In general, all accommodations are within walking distance of the school, usually within 15 minutes and in some cases up to a maximum of 30 minutes. Availability depends on the type of accommodation and the period of your stay.
Does Caminhos offer private apartments?
Yes. Caminhos offers private apartments as one of the accommodation options, subject to availability. Our team can advise you on the best option based on your preferences and length of stay.
Are Caminhos hosts Brazilian?
Yes. Most of our hosts are Brazilian. Staying with a Brazilian host offers a great opportunity to practice Portuguese and experience Brazilian culture in daily life.
Can I bring guests to my accommodation?
Guest policies depend on the accommodation type and host. In general, guests are not allowed, mainly for privacy and security reasons. All rules are clearly communicated before confirmation.
How can I contact my accommodation host?
After your accommodation is confirmed, you will receive the contact details of your host. We recommend contacting your host directly for arrival details and practical questions.
When and how can I pay for my accommodation?
First of all, it is important to get in touch to confirm our availability during the dates you are interested in. Then, in order to confirm the booking, at least a deposit of 1000 BRL should be made in advance, and then the balance can be settled on your check-in date. Our team will inform you of the exact payment method and deadline once your accommodation option is selected.
How long does it take to receive confirmation for accommodation?
Once you send an application form properly requesting an accommodation, our team gets back with a proposal within 2 weeks. Accommodation confirmation usually takes a few days after that, depending on availability and the type of accommodation requested.
Does the accommodation include Wi-Fi?
Yes. All accommodations offered through Caminhos include Wi-Fi.
Is there air conditioning in the accommodation?

How do Caminhos activities work?

On most days, we offer two to three activities per day. You can always check which activities are scheduled by consulting the online calendar on our website.
Where can I sign up for Caminhos activities?
You can sign up for activities at the school reception or through our communication channels, such as WhatsApp. For some activities, no registration is required, and you can simply show up. All details are shared in advance so you know whether sign-up is needed.
Where do we meet for Caminhos activities?
Almost all activities start at Caminhos Language Centre, located at Rua Farme de Amoedo 135. Exact times and any alternative meeting points are communicated clearly in advance, either at the school, via WhatsApp, or in the activity description.
How can I find out which activities are happening this week?

Are the activities free or paid?

Can I bring friends to the tours or activities?
In many cases, friends are welcome to join the activities, even if they are not Caminhos students. This depends on the specific activity and availability and should be confirmed in advance.
I’m not a Caminhos student — can I still join the activities?
Yes, non-students are often welcome to join Caminhos activities. Participation depends on the type of activity and available spots, and prior confirmation may be required.
What is a “Shitty Tour”?
A “Shitty Tour” is a lighthearted name we use for one of our informal group activities. It can be a city walk, a museum visit, or a hike. The name originated when a volunteer once took the wrong metro exit, and the group ended up at a museum that turned out to be closed. She jokingly said it was “a really shitty tour,” and the name stuck as a playful inside joke.

How can I become a volunteer at Mais Caminhos?

Is the volunteer work at Mais Caminhos paid?
No. Volunteer work at Mais Caminhos is unpaid. Mais Caminhos is a social project focused on education and community support.
Can I exchange volunteer work for Portuguese lessons?
No. Volunteer work cannot be exchanged for Portuguese lessons. However, many volunteers choose to combine volunteering with Portuguese courses to deepen their experience in Brazil.
Is accommodation available for volunteers?
Accommodation is not included for volunteers by default. However, if you book a dedicated volunteer package, accommodation is included. In other cases, Caminhos can advise on accommodation options, depending on availability.
Is there a discount on accommodation for volunteers?
No. There are no discounts related to volunteer work. Caminhos and Mais Caminhos were built with the support of volunteers who share and support our philosophy. We support volunteers by offering a meaningful experience and guidance, not through financial discounts.
CERTIFICATES & DOCUMENTS
When do I receive my hours certificate? What does it include?
You receive your hours certificate at the end of your course. The certificate includes your full name, course type, course dates, total study hours, and confirmation of attendance.
Can I request a letter confirming I attended the course?
Yes. Upon request, Caminhos can provide an official attendance letter confirming that you participated in a Portuguese course. This can be useful for employers, universities, or personal records.
How can I get my CPF (Brazilian tax ID)?
Caminhos does not issue CPF numbers. However, our team can guide you through the process and explain how and where to apply for a CPF, either online or in Brazil, depending on your situation.
EXTRA (ORIENTATION & FIRST DAY)
What is the Orientation Day?
The Orientation Day is an introduction to Caminhos, the school, and life in Rio de Janeiro. During the orientation, we explain how the courses work, go over practical information, and answer any remaining questions. It is also a great opportunity to meet other students and feel comfortable before starting classes.
Can I store my belongings at Caminhos?
Caminhos does not have lockers. However, students are welcome to leave personal belongings at the reception during class time. Please note that storage space is limited and valuables should not be left unattended.
