The Communicative Approach – How We Teach Portuguese?
Speak Portuguese Fast: Caminhos offers a diverse and enriching curriculum designed to help you speak Portuguese from day one. The program utilizes the communicative approach, also known as Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), which prioritizes interaction in the learning process. Caminhos moves away from the traditional one-way communication model, where the teacher simply lectures. Instead, teachers will communicate in Portuguese as much as possible throughout the course. Research has shown that this method yields better results, and many find it to be a more enjoyable way to learn compared to traditional methods.
Our native Brazilian teachers are all highly qualified, trained, experienced, and passionate about students’ Portuguese language learning, and are therefore focused on maximising their students’ potential. Small group classes facilitate the opportunity for teachers to focus on students’ needs and create an opportunity for the students to interact.
Our teachers also use experiences of daily life to teach Portuguese lessons, helping students grasp the Brazilian street talk known as ‘gíria’, important when learning to navigate the streets of Rio.
Level Structure & Level Test
Our group courses are offered in 12 different levels, ranging from Basic (A1) to High Advanced (C+), following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. We are the only language school in Rio de Janeiro that provides Portuguese for Foreigners across these 12 levels, ensuring healthy differentiation of skill levels among classmates.
If you are not a complete beginner, we require you to do a level test so our teacher coordinator can place you at the correct level. The oral test is always required, unless you are A1.1.

In-Class Activities
At Caminhos Language Centre, we recognize that Portuguese language learning extends beyond a traditional classroom setting, especially since our group courses provide 4 hours of instruction per day, 5 days a week. To enhance the learning experience, our teachers include a variety of Brazilian cultural and social activities in their lessons, allowing you to practice speaking Portuguese outside the classroom. Some activities take place in the classroom, while others are held in different locations.

Studying Portuguese in Brazil at Caminhos Language Centre will be a lot of fun thanks to all the activities offered! The in-class activities are distinct from the free after-class events, such as beach volleyball and samba classes, organized by Caminhos in the afternoons.
