Bildungsurlaub, or “educational leave,” is a program supported by the German government that allows employees to take paid time off for further education and professional development, in addition to their regular vacation days.
Typically, employees are entitled to 5 days of educational leave per year or 10 days every two years for recognized courses, such as language classes, without any reduction in salary or vacation entitlement.
The specifics, including eligibility and the number of days available, can vary by individual German state. One option for educational leave includes language learning trips abroad with accredited institutions, such as Caminhos.

We actually have an intensive program, an Intensive course for Latin speakers, that will bring you to level A2 within 2 weeks, starting from scratch! Who is eligible for Bildungsurlaub?
Bildungsurlaub is a legal right for employees in 14 out of 16 German federal states (it is not available for workers in Saxony or Bavaria). It is available to almost all employees, provided that it is approved by a company based in one of the eligible federal states and meets the minimum legal requirements set by each state.

FAQ Bildungsurlaub Program
What requirements do I have to meet to apply for educational leave?
Every employee who lives in a federal state that offers Bildungsurlaub is generally entitled to it. As a rule, you must be employed by your current company for at least six months. The exact regulations may vary depending on the federal state.
What documents do I need to apply for educational leave?
You will need a course description and a certificate of recognition confirming that the course is recognized as educational leave. We will provide you with these documents after registration.
Am I eligible for a 5 or 10-day course?
The Bildungsurlaub benefit is for 5 days of educational leave per year, but some federal states allow workers to combine two years for a 10-day program. Please check the requirements above for details relevant to your state.
If I recently changed jobs, can I still apply for Bildungsurlaub?
In most states, you are required to be employed by your current company for at least six months before you are eligible for the Bildungsurlaub program.
What happens at the end of my Bildungsurlaub program at Caminhos?
After completing your program, you will receive a certificate detailing the level of Portuguese achieved, the specific course taken, and the dates of your study period. When you return to Germany, you will be able to show the credential to your employer.
