Drink Caipirinha at Caipi-Sexta

Caipirinha Street Party

Once a month in front of the school we hold our famous ‘Caipi-Sexta’ street party: a friendly welcome party where our new students are presented with a free caipirinha and have the chance to mingle with fellow Portuguese students and the Caminhos team. It is an excellent opportunity to meet all the Caminhos people and provides a good sense of the vibe of our school. Caipi-Sexta has now grown to a big event where we often have 100-150 students and friends of the Caminhos family showing up to socialise with their fellow students and colleagues. The atmosphere is always great!  As well as the obligatory caipirinha (or an alternative drink if caipirinha’s really not your thing!) there are snacks available and brazilian music playing to get Friday evening warmed up. The Caipi-Sexta event also attracts the attention of the locals, who sometimes stop by for a chat. Caipi-Sexta is exactly what Caminhos is all about: we want you to have a great time in Rio while you learn Portuguese.

Many students dive into the nightlife after Caipi-Sexta, which generally ends between 21:00 and 22:00. A five-minute walk to General Osório metro station and you can go onwards to anywhere in the city to enjoy the rest of your Friday night.

Want to drink caipirinha? Make your own!

 Ingredientsdrink caiperinha cup

  • 4 limes
  • 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • 1 cup of crushed or cubed ice
  • 45-75 ml (1.5-2.5 oz) of cachaça

Step 1

Cut the limes into small pieces. Adjust the amount according to taste (generally the more the better).

Step 2

Mix the lime and sugar in a cocktail shaker or a rocks / lowball glass. Use 2 teaspoons of sugar for a sweeter drink. Again, adjust the amount according to taste.

Step 3

‘Muddle’ the sugar and lime by pressing down and twisting repeatedly with a muddler – a long pestle shaped like a miniature baseball bat. Crush the lime just enough to release the juice. If you mash them too much, your drink will be bitter.
If you don’t have a muddler, the back of a spoon will do the job!

Step 4

Add the ice. Do not forget the ice!!!

Step 5

Add the cachaça. Stir. Once again, adjust the quantity to suit your taste.
** Once you’ve made a few attempts you’ll have a better idea what quantities of each ingredient you like best. **

Step 6

Throw in a few lime wedges and drink your delicious caipirinha. Enjoy!!!
