November 20, Black Awareness Day.

On this date, we acknowledge the struggles of black movements to end the oppression caused by slavery in Brazil. November 20 refers to the death of Zumbi dos Palmares, a quilombola leader who fought for freedom of worship and religion, as well as the end of colonial slavery in Brazil.

Despite the 135 years of the law that ended slavery in Brazil, racism continues to be present in social and institutional structures, manifested by various forms of erasure and violence.

We still have a long way ahead in fighting racism.

To wrap up our Black Consciousness Week series, we’re highlighting one of our most loved activities: capoeira! This Afro-Brazilian martial art blends movement, music, and history, giving our students a powerful, immersive experience of Brazil’s Black heritage.

Our capoeira classes aren’t just a workout, they’re a way for students to connect with a rich cultural tradition of resilience and expression. It’s all part of understanding Brazil beyond the classroom.
