Present Continuous in Portuguese | Lesson 8

We saw earlier, in lesson 7, the difference between ser and estar (verb to be). Now letâs learn a verb tense called Presente ContĂnuo (Present Continuous) in Portuguese. Using the present continuous we can express actions that are happening at this right moment or actions that we do on a regular basis.
ELAÂ ESTĂ ANDANDOÂ DE BICICLETA. (She is riding a bike.)

Verb to be (estar) in the present (Presente do Indicativo) + gerund (gerĂșndio)
Gerund:
- Falar â falando
- Comer â comendo
- Partir â partindo
âș We remove the letter r from the infinitive and add -ndo
Example:Â falar â fala + ndo = falando
Letâs see some examples:
â Eu estou estudando portuguĂȘs agora. VocĂȘ pode me ligar mais tarde? (Iâm studying Portuguese now. Can you call me later?)
â Claro, ligo depois. (yes, I will call you later.)
â Alex estĂĄ estudando portuguĂȘs no Rio de Janeiro. (Alex is studying Portuguese in Rio de Janeiro.)
â Que legal! (Thatâs cool.)
â O que eles estĂŁo fazendo agora? (What are they doing now?)
â Eles estĂŁo dormindo. (They are sleeping.)
â A senhora Ana estĂĄ comendo agora. Quer deixar recado? (Mrs. Ana is having lunch now. Do you want to leave a message?)
â NĂŁo, obrigada. Eu ligo mais tarde. (No, thank you. I will call her later.)
