If you are planning on visiting Brazil soon but is not sure how to obtain a tourist visa for Brazil, we are here to help you.
You may not even need a tourist visa for Brazil. Tourists from many countries – such as the U.S.A., Canada, Japan, and Australia – do not need to apply for a tourist visa. All you need when embarking to Brazil is a passport valid for six months past the date of your entry in Brazil; and a return ticket or proof you can pay for your stay in Brazil.

How to get a tourist visa to Brazil?
The best thing is to contact the Brazilian Embassy/Consulate in your country and ask for the specific documents you need to require your tourist visa.
You will most likely need your visa form application, passport, international certificate of vaccination (if needed — check vaccinations needed to enter Brasil), and pay the consulate fee. No tourist visas are issued in Brazil, you need to apply for a Brazilian visa within your country of origin.
Here is the Brazilian visa application form you need to complete in order to start your visa process. In this link, you will find all the information you need regarding documents you may need, fees to be paid, and Brazilian consulates to visit.
How long can I stay in Brazil?
Even if you do not need to apply for a tourist visa, as a tourist, you are allowed to stay for 90 days in Brazil. In some circumstances, you might be able to extend your visit for another 90 days whilst in Brasil.
After you leave Brazil, you are allowed to come back after 180 days, and you will have the right to stay for 90 more days.
Some countries — such as Indonesia and Singapore — only allow you 30 days in Brazil. Be aware that tourist visa conditions also apply to all tourists.
How can I extend my Brazilian tourist visa?
First of all, contact the Brazilian Embassy in your country or speak to the Polícia Federal in Brazil to see if your country qualifies for an extra 90 days extension (not all countries can extend).
If your country qualifies for an extension, you will need to fill out the extension form, pay a fee that costs more or less R$110 (for STN number, type 140090), and go to a Polícia Federal station with your documents.
If everything is right, you will not have much trouble extending your Brazilian tourist visa for 90 extra days.

Can I work in Brazil under a tourist visa?
No, you can not. Many foreigners fall in love with Brazil and decide to stay a little longer. Many try to work as language teachers or other informal jobs to make a bit more money while staying in Brazil longer. It is illegal to work in Brazil under a tourist visa. If you want to work, you must apply for a Brazilian work visa.
Can I change from a tourist visa to a student visa within Brazil?
Yes. You need to be enrolled in a Portuguese course and registered with the Policia Federal. You need to get a full police check; and get your documents (including birth certificate) apostilled, translated into Portuguese, and sent back to Brazil.
Caminhos Language Centre can guide you through this process and help you with the documents needed for you to get a student visa to Brazil. Contact us for more information.
