Table of Contents
Toggle1. Grammar books
Of course, we could not leave the textbooks out of this list. Even though many people prefer to run away from them, you might find them very helpful to get rid of some of your grammar doubts. The Portuguese books we would first recommend are those that provide the answers for the exercises like Gramática Ativa 1 and 2. We use them at Caminhos! They are very easy to understand and great for learning Brazilian Portuguese. Also, the answers are at the back of the book!
Another Portuguese book we would recommend to help you learn faster is Muito Prazer. It does not focus entirely on grammar topics. However, this book includes many different dialogues and the audio (cds are included) is great when trying to improve your listening skills.
If you want to boost your Portuguese language skills, check out the suggestions we present below.
2. Brazilian literature
Comédias para se Ler na Escola
This is one of the most popular Portuguese books written by the very well-known Brazilian writer Luis Fernando Veríssimo. Comédias para se Ler na Escola is a collection of many short funny stories about different topics. This format helps the reader not get bored by taking breaks in between the stories. They are usually two to three pages long and contain simple and easy-to-ready vocabulary. In addition to language learning, you will be able to familiarize yourself with grammatical structures and get to know a little of Brazilian culture and its people.
Turma da Mônica comic book
These comic books are very popular in Brazil among children and even adults. The stories are about the adventures of four kids who live in the same neighborhood in São Paulo. The characters have very interesting personalities and thoughts to share with each other. Brazilian culture and a variety of Portuguese vocabulary present in these magazines help the learner to improve their language skills.
Paulo Coelho’s books
Paulo Coelho is one of the best-selling and most influential authors in the world. Born in Rio de Janeiro, his books are very well-known and prestigious in their many international translations. One of the reasons for his success is his very simple way of writing, which facilitates understanding by beginner-level learners. Some famous titles include: The Alchemist (O Alquimista), Brida & The Winner Stands Alone (O Vencedor está só).
