Days of the week in Portuguese

In Brazil, Sunday is the first day of the week, even if Monday is officially the first business day.

The word Feira

‘Feira’ comes from the Latin word ‘feria’, which means ‘a weekday on which no feast is celebrated.’ Back in the 6th century, these days were considered workdays. That is why we use this word for the days of the week in Portuguese, minus the weekends, in which people usually rest.

In Brazil, it is pretty common for people not to use the word ‘feira’ in informal settings. Therefore, it is usual for Brazilians to refer to the weekdays only as ‘segunda’, ‘terça’, ‘quarta’, ‘quinta’, and ‘sexta’.

When does it rain in Brazil?

Summer is the most humid season in Brazil. So, it does rain quite often around November to April in Brazil. We call it “chuvas de verão” (summer rains). In fact, they do not last long but are usually heavy and frequent.

The best season to visit Brasil

As a tropical country with paradisiac beaches, you might think summer is the best season to visit Brazil. Well, that might not be true. Summer is really hot and humid in Brazil, with temperatures easily reaching over 38/40°C (100/104°F). That might be too extreme for some Europeans and North Americans to handle, especially if you are thinking about touring the country and spending many hours walking outside.

Summer is also peak season in Brazil, with students on vacation and tourism prices at their highest. Besides, as mentioned above, there is a high chance of rain during summer in Brazil.

That being said, if we can give you some advice on when to visit Brazil, we would say during Spring or Autumn. During these times, prices are not that high for accommodation and plane tickets, the weather is still warm and nice, and you can enjoy beautiful blue-sky days while touring the country. So, go for April/May, September/October.

Winter is also a good season to visit Brazil if you are planning on exploring the Northeast region or even Rio de Janeiro. The temperature remains around 26°C (79°F) during this season and you can enjoy sunny days at the beach and the cool weather.
