Trazer and Levar in Portuguese – Verb To Bring | Lesson 13

Hi guys, how are you?
Do you know the difference between verbs Trazer and Levar in Portuguese? Both can be translated as ‘to bring’ in English. However, in Portuguese, they have different meanings.
Let’s see!
Trazer ► aqui (here – to bring it here)
Levar ► lá (there – to bring it someplace else)

If we are at a specific place and need to bring something back to that place, we use the verb Trazer.
Example:
At work…
─ Eduardo, vamos ter uma festa aqui amanhã. Vou trazer refrigerante. Você pode trazer cerveja? (Eduardo, we are having a party here tomorrow. I’m bringing soft drinks. Can you bring some beer?)
─ Claro! Eu trago cerveja e alguns petiscos. (Sure! I will bring some beer and some snacks.)
─ Combinado! (Deal!)
Verb Levar in Portuguese
If we are at a place but need to bring something to a different location, we use the verb Levar.
Example:
At the bus stop…
─ João, você vai à festa lá no trabalho amanhã? (João, are you going to the party there tomorrow?)
─ Vou! (Yes!)
─ O que você vai levar? (What are you bringing?)
─ Vou levar alguns salgadinhos e uma garrafa de vinho tinto. (I’m bringing some snacks and a bottle of wine.)
─ Legal! Até amanhã! (Cool! See you tomorrow!)
Conjugation of Verbs Trazer and Levar in Portuguese
Let’s learn the conjugation of the verbs Trazer and Levar in Portuguese:
Presente do Indicativo (Present Tense)
TRAZER
Eu trago
Você/ele/ela/a gente traz
Nós trazemos
Vocês/eles/elas trazem
LEVAR
Eu levo
Você/ele/ela/a gente leva
Nós levamos
Vocês/eles/elas levam
Ps: A gente = nós.
However, when using “a gente” instead of “nós”, we use the verb in the singular form. A gente traz/a gente leva.
Pretérito do Perfeito (Past Tense)
TRAZER
Eu trouxe
Você/ele/ela/a gente trouxe
Nós trouxemos
Vocês/eles/elas trouxeram
LEVAR
Eu levei
Você/ele/ela/a gente levou
Nós levamos
Vocês/eles/elas levaram

Now it is up to you:
- O que você trouxe do seu país para o Brasil? (What did you bring from your contry?)
- O que você vai levar do Brasil para o seu país? (What are you bringing from Brazil to your country?)
- Geralmente, quando você vai pra/para a praia, o que você leva? (What do you usually bring when going to the beach?)
- O que você traz pra/para a escola todos os dias? (What do do you bring to school everyday?)
- Complete os diálogos: (Complete the dialogs)
a) No restaurante… (At the restaurant…)
─ Garçom, você pode _____ o cardápio de sobremesas, por favor? (Waiter, can you _____ the dessert menu, please?)
─ Sim, claro. Eu _____ em um minuto. (Yes, sure. I can _____ it in just a minute.)
─ Obrigado. Tudo estava ótimo! (Thank you. Everything was great.)
─ Que bom! Posso _____ os pratos? (Good! Can I _____ the dishes?)
─ Sim, pode _____ os pratos e _____ a conta. (Yes, you can _____ the dishes and _____ the check.)
b) Na padaria… (At the bakery…)
─ Bom dia! Por favor, me vê* um café! (Good morning! Can I have a coffee, please?)
─ Pra agora ou pra _____? (For now or to _____ home?)
─ Pra _____, por favor. (To _____ home, please.)
*me vê = can you give me, I want, I would like
