ToggleOverview of the Public Transportation in Rio de Janeiro
Public transportation in Rio de Janeiro is extensive and diverse, catering to both locals and tourists. Whether you are exploring the bustling city center, relaxing on the iconic beaches, or venturing into picturesque neighborhoods, there is a mode of transport for every need.
Buses
Buses are the backbone of the public transportation system in Rio de Janeiro, offering extensive coverage throughout the city. They are a budget-friendly option, with fares typically ranging from R$4 to R$5 in 2023. Bus routes crisscross the entire city, making it easy to reach popular attractions like Copacabana and Sugarloaf Mountain. However, buses in Rio are not as clean or well-maintained as the metro, so we would advise not to choose them for longer rides.
BRT (Bus Rapid Transit)
For a faster and more comfortable journey, consider using the BRT system, known as “BRT Rio.” It combines dedicated bus lanes and modern stations. Fares are similar to regular buses, but you will appreciate the reduced travel time, especially during peak hours. While BRT does not cover the city center and South Zone of Rio, it is a great choice for The North and West Zones, even connecting these regions to the international airport. Check the BRT route map here.
VLT (Light Rail)
The VLT is an excellent choice for exploring downtown Rio de Janeiro. It connects key areas like the Olympic Boulevard and Santos Dumont Airport. Fares are R$4.30 in 2023, making it a cost-effective way to get around the city center. Check the VLT route map here.
Ferry Boat
If you are headed to Niterói, Ilha do Governador, or the Paquetá Island, or simply want a unique experience, take the ferry boat across Guanabara Bay. The scenic views of Rio’s coastline and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue are bonuses. The ferry boat leaves from Praça XV in Centro and a one-way ticket costs R$7.70 in 2023.

Train
Rio’s train system provides reliable transportation to the suburbs. It is an excellent choice if you plan to explore areas outside the city center. The train costs R$7.40 as of 2023.
Metro
Rio’s metro system is efficient, clean, and reliable making it a top choice for tourists. Everyone will tell you the metro is the best public transportation in Rio de Janeiro. A single metro ticket costs R$6.90 as of 2023. Moreover, its broad network includes stops near Maracanã Stadium and Ipanema Beach. Check the metro route map here.
Taxi and Uber
For convenience and flexibility, taxis and Uber are readily available. Taxis have a starting fare of R$6, with additional charges based on distance. Uber prices may vary but are often fairly cheap in Rio, where most trips do not surpass R$25.
Always choose to take a taxi or Uber to go back home after a night out instead of using the bus or walking home. While in Rio, it is better to be safe than sorry.

It not only saves you time but also offers discounted fares for multiple trips. You can get yours in any metro station or online. To activate discount options, you might need a CPF.
Better Options for Each Region
- Beach Areas (Copacabana, Ipanema): Buses, bikes, and the metro are great choices for beach-hopping, while taxis and Uber offer convenience for shorter trips.
- Downtown: VLT is ideal for exploring downtown attractions, and the metro provides quick access to the city center.
- Suburbs (Zona Norte): Consider taking the BRT or metro to reach these regions efficiently.
- Barra da Tijuca: a combination of metro + BRT will take you anywhere in Barra da Tijuca.
- Niterói and Paquetá: for a day trip to Rio’s sister city or tourist island, use the ferry boat.
- Airport Transfers: BRT and VLT are excellent options for reaching both Santos Dumont Airport and Galeão Airport.
Rio de Janeiro’s public transportation system offers a range of options to suit every traveler’s needs and budget. With the right choices for each region and a Rio Card in hand, you’ll be able to explore this stunning city with ease.
